In the pink Fundraisers are really

HAIRDRESSERS in Basingstoke were pretty in pink for a breast cancer charity fundraising day.
For the Breast Cancer Campaign’s Wear it Pink Day, Taylor’s Hair and Beauty, in Wote Street, Basingstoke, invited patients from the breast cancer care unit at Basingstoke hospital.
They were able to enjoy an afternoon of pampering that included help with nails and hair.
Owner Janis Taylor said she decided to hold the event after a long time client and good friend Julia Dingwall was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2007.
Mrs Taylor said: “We have all been wearing our pink bras and giving free treatments to the patients. We wanted to do something for them after everything they have been through.”
Mrs Dingwall, a 44 year old mum-of-two and lecturer at Basingstoke College of Technology, said: “These treatments are actually key if you have just had chemotherapy and you have lost your hair and have rotten nails.
“They can actually make you feel better and help with your recovery.”
Mrs Dingwall and Mrs Taylor have already together raised £4,000 for the breast cancer care unit by holding a ball in Oakley Village Hall in June as well an auction. They are planning another ball next year.
Meanwhile, Graham Kent, who owns FHC For Hair in Elmwood Way, Winklebury, was in the pink.
The 58 year old gave himself an unusual new look and asked his staff and customers to wear pink items, and by the end of the day they had collected £270.
He told The Gazette: “It was great fun and all the girls enjoyed dressing up in items like pink pyjamas and pink slippers.
“We took the liberty of phoning all of our customers on that day to say if they wore pink we would donate £2 to the charity on their behalf. It was actually pleasing to look how many people wanted to be involved.”

In pink Binmen look pretty

WESTMINSTER residents may have done a double take when they saw these binmen doing the rounds.
Caps of Pink were donned by waste contractors across the borough, to raise cognizance of the Breast Cancer Campaign's Wear it Pink week.
These binmen from Mayfair's Farm Street depot, together with other Veolia waste management contractors, bought more than 450 particularlly made hats between them, raising nearly £1,400.
The money raised will go to support 130 research projects in 43 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland.
Scott Edgell, Veolia's contract manager in Westminster, said: "Breast cancer is sadly all too common and we all know somebody who has been affected by it in some way."And we all have mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters who we would want to be able to get the very best available treatment should the unthinkable ever occur.
"We support Wear it Pink every year as it is a fun and easy way to donate and I would like to thank all the employees who took part in this important fundraising initiative by buying our pink headgear."
